Policy & Initiatives Director, Carpe Diem - Western Water & Climate Change Project

Position Overview:

The Policy & Initiatives Director will work directly with the Carpe Diem Project Director to further incubate policy and management practices campaigns using the Project's methodology of highlighting the best science, reframing issues to provide wins for stakeholders, and supporting key leadership. The Policy & Initiatives Director will coordinate Carpe Diem's community of stakeholders around one or more of the Project's three priority initiatives:

  • Healthy Headwaters Initiative
  • Water, Energy, and Climate Change Initiative
  • Colorado River Basin Initiative

This process involves:

  • Mapping out the steps to successful, stakeholder-led actions; identifying, engaging and supporting the leadership needed to create the framework for new alliances and campaigns.
  • Pinpointing the scientific, economic, ecosystems information, and other tools needed to further develop policy and best practices objectives.
  • Highlighting existing programs that are successfully addressing the priority issues and explore ways to replicate these programs and take them to scale where possible.

Responsibilities:

The Policy & Initiatives Director will also lead the process to formulate and implement initiatives or opportunities for new policy and management practices, based on an analysis of emerging issues in the field. Working with Carpe Diem's Director, the Policy & Initiatives Director will develop business plans and coordinate with the Carpe Diem Project leadership team, working groups and advisors to articulate the initiative's goals and the resources needed to achieve them.

Additionally, the Policy & Initiatives Director will work as part of the Carpe Diem team to:

  • Expand and strengthen the Project Network.
  • Highlight what is already working in the field in terms of response and adaptation to climate change and promote that success.
  • Conduct an annual survey and field assessment and provide an annual report to the field.
  • Build on communications research: focus groups and polling to develop a synthesis of public opinion and messages about climate change and western water.
  • Expand the Project's social media presence.
  • Secure long-term funding for initiatives and related programs.

Qualifications:

  • A broad-level understanding of the western water and climate change challenge.
  • A minimum of 5 - 7 years direct experience working with, and relationships with relevant leadership in one or more of Carpe Diem's key constituencies.
  • 5 - 7 years of demonstrated experience and success creating and implementing programs from start to finish.
  • An inspiring and collaborative leadership style that engages the support and talents of others, and the charisma and energy to create enduring partnerships with individuals and institutions that support the Carpe Diem Project's goals and strategies.
  • Proven ability to organize and effectively handle multiple projects, meet regular deadlines with consistency and accuracy, work independently while within a team structure, and work under pressure with ease and humor.
  • Proven ability to chart strategic directions that result in clear operational goals.
  • Proven experience in fundraising (major donor, foundations, corporations).
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate Exloco and the Carpe Diem Project's mission and work to diverse audiences.
  • Professionally thrives in an innovative, constantly expanding work environment.
  • A demonstrated understanding of media, social networking and public relations.
  • Ability to travel and attend weekend meetings and conferences, as needed; valid drivers license.
  • Extensive experience with email and the Internet, and familiarity with Apple computer programs, including Word and Excel.
