Position Overview:

Edwina von Gal, President, a renowned landscape designer and environmentalist; Mark Wishnie, Vice President and founder of Prorena; and, Vernon Scholey, Chair of the Board and Director of the Achotines Laboratory, founded AEP. Their vision is to create a dry forest corridor and use it as a laboratory to address many of the issues that threaten to destroy similar geographies throughout the tropics. Through a vast network of relationships throughout the US and Panama, Ms. von Gal has attracted a committed Board of Directors, Advisory Committee, research and scientific partners, individual and foundation funders and numerous local Panamanian supporters.

The organization is prepared to bring on a seasoned professional to build on AEP's early successes. The Director of Marketing and Development will be responsible for cultivating many external relationships and raising funds from individual, corporate, foundation and government supporters. AEP has an office in the Azuero Peninsula and in East Hampton, New York. The primary marketing and fundraising activities will revolve around US-based funding sources so we assume the candidate will live and work in the New York metropolitan area and will take at least 2 extended trips to Panama annually to cultivate key affiliates there.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the President, the Director of Marketing and Development will be responsible for planning and implementing an annual communications, marketing and fundraising strategy. Since Azuero Earth Project is only in its third year of operation, the Director of Marketing and Development will design and produce many of the critical tools to help raise brand awareness; secure media coverage; cultivate and maintain relationships with funders and donors.

Specifically, the Director will:

Create a fundraising case statement to solicit support from Foundations;
Develop a campaign to reach prospective corporate and small business funders;
Work closely with the Executive Director to solicit support and major gifts from individual donors;
Develop bilingual collateral materials for fundraising initiatives;
Create a bilingual communications plan and information kit to convey key messages to AEP's constituencies including the media;
Identify potential supporters among young Panamanian leaders who feel strongly about environmental preservation;
Design and manage local events in Azuero and in New York to raise interest and awareness among various audiences;
Coordinate and manage one "donor adventure" to Panama in January-February;
Build on our successes with students and scientists by forming more educational partnerships with target research institutions;
Maintain a calendar of grant applications; draft applications and take responsibility for all grant reporting for 5-10 foundation grants annually;
Utilize a CRM database to manage ongoing communication with prospects and donors year-round.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have at least 10+ years of marketing and fundraising experience in the non-profit environment sector. We are seeking an individual with these qualifications:

A passionate, life-long personal and professional commitment to the environment;
Experience implementing an annual fundraising campaign to engage foundation, government, corporate and individual contributors;
A fundamental understanding of a mission-driven community-based organization;
A branding point of view -- in other words, a fundraising strategy that makes the activities in Panama real and compelling to US-based donors;
Experience garnering media coverage in print, broadcast and social media outlets;
Experience implementing direct marketing, promotions and fundraising events;
A strong desire to meet new people and develop relationships on behalf of AEP;
Bilingual fluency is required; familiarity with Panama is a plus.
